midnight children's legacy, the new generation

Its the generation after the midnight children. They are the sons and daughters of those secular parents who instilled in their children the futility of caste wars and made their kids chant eeshwar allah sabko sanmathi.

Today, the kids have come of age and are witnessing the hypocrisy of the ideals mouthed. Communities are more divided than they were before the partition. The next generation has witnessed too many caste riots which have brought neither relief nor justice. Fundamentalists have risen in all communities for the simple reason that if you don't fight you don't win. The generation after midnight children has become cynical and has embraced a western lifestyle.
What hypocrisy and fundamentalism hasn't delivered, the Western world of materialism and new technology has. The Now generation suspects everyone and believes none, its solace is in instant nirvana and money is the only mantra they chant. The color of nationalism is neither saffron nor green, its chamaleon tinge changes depending where it comes from: petro dollars or the US currency.
The age of success has advanced by twenty years. What their fathers achieved at forty, the next generation wants to achieve in its twenties. There is a competitive rush to meet the magic millenium before it accosts them. There simply is no time to stand and stare.
